This is an intermediate course in the art and science of wine, aimed at those already working in the trade or keen amateurs ready to explore in a little more depth. You will learn about the key grape varieties, different styles of wine, and the production of spirits and liqueurs. Tasting technique is a key component and every session will include a themed selection of wines to illustrate the main points discussed. You will learn to use the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting® to analyse wines objectively and consistently.
The course runs over 8 session of 2 hours each, plus a final examination consisting of 50 multiple choice questions.
This course builds on the knowledge and tasting skills acquired from the Level 2 course and continues with a clear focus on developing effective tasting technique. Successful students will be able to describe the production methods and organoleptic characteristics of a broad range of high-quality wines and spirits from around the world. The WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting® is followed when tasting each wine.
The course runs over 14 sessions of 2 hours each, plus a final examination consisting of a Theory paper (50 multiple choice questions + short written answer questions) + a Tasting paper (blind tasting of 2 wines).
This is a two-year programme of study designed for those wishing to become an expert in the field of wines and spirits. It is a significant undertaking and requires substantial home study to consolidate the knowledge and skills learnt in class, but those who gain the qualification are well-placed to take up senior positions in the wine industry such as management, buying and sales executive roles. Many dedicated amateurs also benefit from the added enjoyment and confidence the course brings. The Diploma is viewed universally as the stepping-stone to the Master of Wine qualification.
The Diploma qualification is broken down into six mandatory units, each of which is assessed separately and must be passed before a student can gain the full qualification. WineMatters is unique in that all classes are taught by a Master of Wine and we often open rare and expensive wines to give our students an opportunity to taste the full range of quality levels and ages. The WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting® is followed when tasting each wine.
The course runs over two years with exam dates in November, January and June; most units include both theory and tasting assessment.
